Pencarrow House
~

A really quite amazing Georgian house and gardens, belonging to the Molesworth-St.Aubyn family, and made even more fascinating in that it is a very much lived in, and living, house that makes it a real historic gem amongst the large country houses and estates open to the public in Cornwall. Such houses need supporting in order to retain their rich heritage, and to maintain the extensive building and gardens as they need to be, and this one is well worth a visit.

The house is approached up a mile-long drive, which passes through an ancient British encampment, and woodland grounds. The grounds cover 50 acres, and include an Italian Garden, lake and an Ice House.

The name "Pencarrow" comes from "Pen - penn" as in head, end or top (of a valley, headland etc) and "carow" as in stag, or in the case of Pencarrow House, likely a deer park.
